Vandenberg Air Force Base

A United States Air Force Base, Vandenberg is located just a short drive from Lompoc Valley Inn & Suites. Under the jurisdiction of the 30th Space Wing, Air Force Space Command, Vandenberg AFB is home to Space Launch Complex-10 where Thor missiles have been tested and Thor/Agena spacecraft have been launched. This landmark, which is open to the public for tours, is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.

  • How do I sign up for a tour?

    To sign up for a tour of the Historic Space Launch Complex-10, you must register 10 days in advance via email: vandenbergcommunityrelations@vandenberg.af.mil. Make sure to provide your full name, date of birth, and driver’s license number. Tours take place the third Tuesday of every month at 1:00 p.m.
  • When was the first satellite launched from Vandenberg?

    The date of the first satellite launched from Vandenberg AFB was April 16, 1959. It was the first polar orbiting satellite and it was called Discoverer I. This was a missile test that was a joint venture between a United States Air Force and British Royal Air Force crew.
